He greeted them with the known phrase, “Hola”. However, when the
lecture began, the careless mood disappeared and Imai started to
distribute the material he had prepared. As a course for beginners, he
first explained the grammar and the use of 2 main verbs, in addition to
the history of cultural exchange between
Japan and
Spain. He
also showed a video of himself dancing flamenco, since he had
originally planned to perform the dance live but was unable to do it
because the doctor recommended to rest after a recent episode of
appendicitis.
Imai began to work in flamenco for a solo stage-play he starred in
back in 2007. He visited Spain and started learning Spanish. He has
visited Spain many times and in 2011, he was appointed as navigator of
NHK’s “Spanish TV”, a learning program dedicated to that language. He is
fluent in Spanish and was appointed for that reason as the world’s
first Spanish Cultural Ambassador.
On this day, he also dedicated a time to answer questions from the
students and encouraged them to learn this language, “If you dedicate
even the time you spent in the bathroom, you’d be able to study
day-by-day”. When he was asked about about how to move around Spain
without spending a lot of money he answered, “Well, there’s the Metro.
Tram rides are also convenient. You can also just wait out for the
football players in Barcelona”, he joked.
Imai-sensei was very popular among students. Female student A (18)
commented, “He was very gentle and explained the most practical terms.
I’d love to receive lessons from him again”. A male student (22) who
received a hug from Tsubasa added, “It was very easy to understand him.
He smells nice too”, he expressed with great joy.
Professor
Sumita Tetsuyasu (50) who invited Imai to
give this lecture, also attended and gave Tsubasa, “120 points. From now
on I’ll do the lessons so it’ll be hard for me to follow. I’d like him
to become a recurrent visiting professor in the future”. Imai also
showed a willingness, “It was a very inspiring time. Maybe about 75
points. I want to stand in the podium on regular basis in the future”.
